1.40813 SURVEY METHODS & QUALITY CONTROL

Basic concepts including target population, sampling frame, sampling unit, sample, response variable, parameters to be estimated, pilot studies. Guidelines for questionnaire construction, simple random sampling with and without replacement, systematic sampling, stratified random sampling, cluster sampling, ratio and regression estimates, sources of error in sample surveys. Quality control, total quality management (TQM), causes of variation in quality, different types of quality control, scope of quality control. Process control; control chart, Shewhart's control chart technique, process capability analysis. Product control, sampling inspection plans, average outgoing quality limit (aoql), operating characteristic (oc) curves. Computer implementations via appropriate software and calculator.

Four lectures/tutorials and one computer lab per week.

Assessment:

Two tests (15%), approximately four assignments (15%), project (10%), final exam (60%).

1.20812 and permission of the Discipline.
