2.14431 NATURAL & BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES APPLIED TO ANAESTHESIA
The aim of the course is to provide a background in natural and biological sciences applied to anaesthesia, on which to build sound anaesthesia practice. The specific objectives are to: describe principles of chemistry and physics relevant to anaesthesia; demonstrate a knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the body, with particular emphasis on cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous systems and metabolic homeostasis; apply knowledge of clinical measurement to monitor patients; demonstrate an understanding of principles of pharmacology relevant to anaesthesia; and appreciate the microbiologic basis of infection and its transmission.
Contact hours: 4 weeks lectures, 8 hours per day = 160 hours; Clinical full time = 30 weeks; Revision = 1 week; Exam =1 week
Assessment: Exam consists of written (25%), oral (25%) and practical (25%) at the end of semester 2. Assignments: 4 per semester (25%)
