2.14433 EMERGENCY PATIENT CARE

The course aims to provide students with an introduction to the essentials of emergency care and intensive care, including resuscitation and crisis management of conditions relevant to anaesthesia. The specific objectives are to: describe assessment and care of patients with respiratory failure; identify features and correction of cardiac failure and shock; provide care of the unconscious patient; demonstrate the ability to mechanically ventilate a patient; and demonstrate intravenous access in an emergency setting.

Contact hours: 4 weeks lectures, 8 hours per day = 160 hours; Clinical full time = 30 weeks; Revision = 1 week; Exam = 1 week

Assessment: Exam consists of written (25%), oral (25%) and practical (25%) at the end of semester 2; Four assignments per semester (25%)
