2.14434 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY & EQUIPMENT

The course aims to familiarise students with the principles and practice which underlie occupational health and safety in the workplace, including infection control. To enable students to use and maintain anaesthesia and related equipment effectively. The specific objectives are to: describe environmental and clinical factors which influence a safe working environment; apply knowledge of electrical safety, safety of gas and suction supplies, infection risk and other environmental hazards to protect patients and staff against dangers; demonstrate knowledge of safe care and use of anaesthetic agents and drugs; demonstrate knowledge of electrical safety, gas supplies and suction; demonstrate knowledge of function of anaesthesia equipment; appreciate basic care of anaesthesia related equipment; describe methods of preventative maintenance of anaesthesia equipment; and identify a systems approach to ordering, stocking and repair of anaesthesia related equipment.

Contact hours: 4 weeks lectures, 8 hours per day = 160 hours; Clinical full time = 30 weeks; Revision = 1 week; Exam = 1 week

Assessment: Exam consists of written (25%), oral (25%) and practical (25%) at the end of semester 2; four assignments per semester (25%).
