2.24803 HISTOLOGY

This course is conducted by the Discipline of Medical Laboratory Sciences
This course is an introduction to the basic microanatomical structure of the human body. It is designed to incorporate the theoretical and practical aspects of histology in view to normal structural histology. A brief overview on the histological tissue preparation and familiarization with the use of microscopes; discrimination of microanatomical structures. This course covers the cell structure and the functions of cellular organelles; nucleus, mitochondria, Golgi complex etc. Overview of the four basic body tissues; epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous tissues. Systemic structural and functional histology relative to the cardiovascular system, the haemopoletic and lymphatic systems, the neurosensory system, the digestive system and the accessory glands, the respiratory, the urogenital system and the endocrine glands.

Aim: To consolidate biochemistry and molecular biology instructions within the framework of organ microanatomy.

Contact hours: 6 hours per week (2 lectures, 1 tutorial, 3 practical)

Assessment: Course work (assignments, tests, practical write-up, oral presentations) 60%, final exam (theory & practical) 40%.
