2.24808 HAEMATOLOGY I

This course is conducted by the Discipline of Haematology.
Normal haemopoletic system and development of normal blood cells; structure and function of normal blood cells; an overview of the haemoglobin structure and its function, haemoglobin assay methods; manual cell counting techniques; preparation of basic stains. Preparation, staining and examination of a normal blood film, including a differential white cell count. Theory of Coagulation Pathway; Coagulation tests. Introduction to red blood cell abnormalities; types of anaemia and calculation of red cell indices.

To convey an understanding of the theory and practice of basic haemotological procedures and tests used in a routine haematology laboratory.

Contact hours: 6 hours per week (2 lectures, 1 tutorial, 3 practical)

Assessment: Course work (assignments, tests, practical write-up, oral presentations) 60%, final exam (theory & practical) 40%.
