2.24901 PHARMACEUTICS
This course aims to enable students to acquire and apply necessary knowledge of Pharmaceutics and further principles of physical pharmacy in the design and preparation of pharmaceutical dosage forms. On completion of this course the student should be able to understand the range and constituents of pharmaceutical products; be able to perform pharmaceutical calculations; demonstrate a knowledge of official pharmaceutical formulae; explain the principles of physical pharmacy as they relate to the design and formulation of solid dosage forms such as powders, granules, tablets and aerosols; evaluate basic properties of liquid and solid dosage forms; and respond to problems about solid dosage forms in terms of the various substances included, and their pharmaceutical importance.
Contact hours: 6 hours per week (2 Lectures, 1 tutorial 3 hour- practical weekly).
Assessment: Test, assignments, practicals (60%), final exam (40%).
Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology/Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree
