2.34807 HAEMATOLOGY II

This course is conducted by the Discipline of Haematology
The course covers the following topics: thalassemia and G6PD deficiency, benign disorders of white blood cells and platelets. Introduction to acute and chronic leukaemia; lymphomas and multiple myelomas. Overview of statistical analysis in haematology; overview of quality control in haematology laboratory and research techniques.

1. To understand the principles of haemostasis and the basic coagulation pathway and the tests involved.
2. To convey an understanding of the theory and practice of conditions and diseases that affect red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

Contact hours: 6 hours per week (2 lectures, 1 tutorial, 3 practical).

Assessment: Course work (assignments, tests, practical write-up, oral presentations) 60%, final exam (theory & practical) 40%.
