2.34808 IMMUNOHAEMATOLOGY

This course is conducted by the discipline of Haematology.
This single semester course covers both theoretical and practical aspects of blood banking. An overview on the theory of blood groups; ABO and Rhesus systems. Clinical significance of other blood groups. Immunological aspects of blood transfusion. Principles of blood grouping procedures and cross matching. Blood collection, processing and storage; preparation of blood products. Alloantibodies and complications of blood transfusion and infections. Antenatal serology and haemolytic disease of the newborn.

Aim: To convey an understanding of the theory and practice of safe blood transfusion medicine.

Contact hours: 6 hours per week (2 lecturers, 1 tutorial, 3 practical).

Assessment: Course work (assignments, tests, practical write-up, oral presentations) 60%, final exam (theory & practical) 40%.
