2.34905 MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY

The course aims to introduce students to the major chemical therapeutic categories. On completion, the student should be able to show an appreciation of the different chemical drug categories and how their relationship and differences are exploited in the fight with diseases. Topics include: brief introduction to the pharmaceutical chemistry of drug molecules: sulphonamides, antibiotics, antimalarials; anthelmintics; centrally acting drugs; narcotic analgesics, tranquillisers and anti-depressants, general anaesthetics, steroids and contraceptives; autonomic nervous system agonists and antagonists, diuretics, drugs acting on the cardiovascular system.

Contact hours: 6 hours per week (2 Lectures, 1 Tutorial and 3 hour practical).

Assessment: Tests, assignments, practicals (60%), final exam (40%).
