2.39804 DENTAL & HEALTH SCIENCES II
This course covers the theoretical knowledge pertaining to the diagnosis and treatment of more complex oral health problems, e.g. mucosal pathology, oral health problems in children (Pedodontics), and of Periodontal (gum) Disease. It also provides an introduction to Dental Pulp Canal Therapy (Endodontics); surgical techniques relating to more complex tooth extractions: inter-dental wiring for stabilization of fractured mandibles to (in emergency cases only. i.e., where there is no Dentist or Medical Officer available).
Theoretical considerations in the management of severely medically compromised patients, of physically and mentally disabled, and of dependent elderly patients will be discussed. A special period of instruction on the recognition of th primary symptoms of HIV Infection, of the oral lesions indicative of the likely progression of HIV infection to AIDS, and the Primary Care management and referral of such cases will also be given. This will be supported by clinical experience of such cases, as described later.
