2.39806 APPLIED CLINICAL DENTAL PRACTICE - II
This course provides the clinical practice experience required to diagnose and treat the more common oral health problems in PNG. These include Dental Caries and Periodontal Diseases and a large component of the course involves the placement of restorations in decayed teeth. However, a very strong emphasis throughout the course is the importance of Clinical Preventive Dentistry, and Minimally Invasive techniques of restoring teeth. The course also prepares the students to carry out minor Oral Surgery procedures.
In Semester 2, special instruction and clinical experience will be provided on the management of the more complex dental extractions, and in emergency situations. (i.e., when there is no Dentist or Medical Officer available), the inter-dental stabilization of mandibular fractures, of management of dental procedures in patients with severe medical problems, and in the management of disabled patients. BOH students will be expected to be able to perform Emergency Endodontic Treatment only on maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth e.g. Traumatized or abscessed Anterior Teeth. They should be able to splint traumatized teeth using composite resin or other appropriate cements.
Time will be spent helping students learn to carry out routine maintenance of dental equipment, and deal with some of the simpler, safe repairs they can carry out.
