This course is conducted by the Discipline of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
This is a major elective course that will allow students to enhance their communication and research skills through research and self-directed learning exercises negotiated with a lecturer. Students will choose a research topic in Clinical Biochemistry discipline where a student is expected to do a research project supported by literature reviews for two semesters. The minimum requirements in cases of literature reviews should include a clearly defined intended learning issues and the use of a variety of learning resources. This is negotiated with the supervisor/lecturer and upon agreement being reached, is signed by both parties by the end of the second week of semester one.
Outcome: The student should be able to build on the instructions acquired in research methods and be able to plan and carry out a research project. By pursuing a particular research topic of relevance to medical laboratory sciences a student should develop research skills, scientific writing skills and become knowledgeable in their chosen electives.
Contact hours: 6 hours (consultation and practical).
Assessment: Course work (abstracts, presentations*) 40%. Paper submission. oral presentation 60%
* May include divisional seminars, medical symposium etc.
