2.44904 COMMUNITY PHARMACY

The course aims to enable the student to attain professional competencies in over-the-counter diagnosis and counselling at the private community pharmacy. On completion, the student should be able to diagnose minor ailments at the private community pharmacy; be able to select the appropriate products/medications to treat and relieve symptoms of minor ailments presented at the community pharmacy; be able to provide advice on products selected and general health care; be able to communicate effectively with patients; and know when to refer patients to a Medical officer for further investigations. Topics include: communication skills, gastro-intestinal problems, respiratory tract problems, skin conditions, painful conditions, conditions affecting women, eye and ear problems, childhood conditions, health promotion and education.

Contact hours: 6 hours per week working in a hospital pharmacy and area medical stores.

Assessment: Course work (60%), final exam (40% ).

Prerequisite: Completion of Year 2 courses.
