On completion, the student should be able to: demonstrate adequate knowledge of the safe and effective therapeutic use of various chemotherapeutic drugs and describe the principles of drug development, clinical trials and rational therapy. Topics include: chemotherapy of infections; Chemotherapy of Urinary Tract Infections; Chemotherapy of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Anti-malarial Drugs, Anti-amoebic and other anti-protozoal Drugs, Anti-fungal Drugs, Anti-viral Drugs, Anti-helminthic Drugs; General Principles of Clinical Use of Anti-microbial Drugs; Chemotherapy of Malignancy; Chemotherapy of Neoplastic Diseases; Principles of Rational Prescribing; Principles Of Management Of Undesirable Drug Events; Principles of Drug Development & Monitoring; Monitoring of Drug Effects (Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, ADR and Drug-Interaction Monitoring; Principles of Drug Assay (including Bioassay); and, Principles of Biostatistics in drug research.

Contact hours: 6 hours per week (3 hours lecture/tutorials, 3 hours practical).

Assessment: Tests, assignments (60%), final exam (40%).

Prerequisite: Year 3 Pharmacology courses.
