2.59801 CLINICAL PRACTICE I
This course covers the theoretical considerations behind Orthodontics, and advanced. Removable Prosthetics, e.g. Immediate and Overlay Denture construction, and Metal Partial Denture construction. In Orthodontic Theory, the students will be introduced to the scientific basis of tooth movement, and given laboratory practice in the construction of removable Orthodontic Appliances. The way in which the more complex fully and partially edentulous patient cases are managed will be discussed. Further instruction in General and Oral Medicine will be given to increase the awareness of the interaction between dental and medical considerations in treating patients.
Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgical Techniques will be discussed, and referral processes outlined. General and Dental Pharmaco-Therapeutics will also be covered. More advanced Oral Surgical theory will be taught mainly involving principles of General Anaesthesia. In the final term, the Legal and Ethical requirements of Dentists will be covered, together with additional consideration of the responsibilities of Dentists to cooperate with authorities in the application of Forensic Dental Technology.
Course hours: Four hours per week
Assessment: Continuous assessment 60%, final exam 40%.
