6.13901 Communication & Life Skills

This course is aimed at providing students in the first year with the literacy and communication skills needed to succeed in their University studies. It covers the process of communication, communication barriers, and interpersonal communication. The students use their knowledge and skills to examine sexuality and violence; conception, pregnancy and birth; and HIV/Aids. It includes both communication skills and life skills to help students become better and more effective communicators. It also enables them to develop a confident and positive attitude to life. Apart from enabling students to gain power and succeed in their studies, it also provides skills that will enhance interpersonal relationships at the University and later in the workplace. It gives a firm basis for further studies beyond UPNG.

Contact hours: 4 hours per week (2 lectures, 2 tutorials)

Assessment: 1 major assignment, 2 tests, tutorial attendance and presentation and final exam.

Prerequisite: Higher School Certificate (Year 12)
