6.13902 COMPUTER LITERACY & NUMERACY

This course teaches basic principles of numeracy and promotes problem solving skills applicable to problems encountered in everyday situations. The topics include understanding introductory ideas in arithmetic, algebra, ratio, proportion, statistics and processing simple and compound interest. The course also covers introduction to word processing using MS Word and spreadsheets using MS Excel. Students will develop capacity in these areas and use the computer to prepare documents, and for solving simple problems. Students will learn about the internet and may have the opportunity to surf the net for information and send and receive e-mail. Each student will spend two hours on the computer each week. Students who feel that they have already acquired a working knowledge of computing and basic numeracy skills and wish to be considered for exemption from the course are required to sit an examination and must pass in order to be exempted.

Contact Hours: 4 hours per week (2 lectures, 2 tutorials)

Assessment: 1 practical exam, 2 assignments, and final exam.

Prerequisite: Higher School Certificate (Year 12)
