GENERAL ADVICE TO STUDENTS

The Tutorial Room Book Cupboard

All students in years 2 and 3 have access to the textbook collections in their tutorial rooms. These textbooks are an extremely valuable resource and it is vital that the books are kept in good condition and that the collection remains intact. All students who share the tutorial room are responsible for the maintenance of the book cupboard in that room and will share the financial penalty for any books that are seriously damaged or missing when the collection is audited. Rules for the management of these book collections are posted on the book cupboards.

Clinical Activities

Involvement in clinical activities in hospital and community settings commences in year 2 and increases over the course of the four year curriculum.

As health professionals in training, medical students are expected to behave in a professional manner in all health settings at all times. The personal needs and rights of patients and their families must always be heeded and respected.

White coats are not generally required, but students should check with their tutor. A student identification card must be worn at all times in the hospital and during any activities in the community.

Punctuality is required.

Clothing must be neat and clean; T-shirts are not acceptable. Shoes or sandals must be clean; in general, thongs are not acceptable.

The Timetable

Please notify the Curriculum Office if timetable clashes are identified or if any difficulties arise.

Some activities involve small groups of, students (eg A1-5): refer to the student allocation list. Student groups and numbers are for the duration of year 2, allowing that some minor adjustments may be required when student enrolments are completed.

Students must not write and/or sign treatment orders, prescriptions, medical certificates or discharge summaries, even if requested to do so by Resident or Nursing staff. This is both unethical and illegal and carries the risk of harsh penalties.

Students are also encouraged to attend the regular Grand Rounds/Clinical Science lecture, each Tuesday afternoon, 4.00 - 5.00pm.
