Academic Year
There are 3 terms (or Blocks) in year 3, each of 12 - 13 weeks duration, inclusive of a one week study-break and one week allocated for progressive assessment. There are two vacation weeks, the second of these is during term 3, in the week of the PNG Medical Symposium. There is a 3 week elective (elective 3) at the end of the final assessment period; additional assessments are held during the third week.
Assessment
Assessment at the end of each Block is progressive, contributing to the final summative assessment grade. Formative assessment questions (Domain 2) are available in the last week of each Block.
Students who are "not satisfactory" on the results of any assessment are required to participate in remedial activities with the appropriate discipline(s). Students who are "not satisfactory" following the final assessment are required to use elective 3 for remediation, prior to additional assessment. Additional assessments may not be offered to students with a record of consistent or substantial failure during the year.
It is anticipated that the year 3 Group Task assessment (and own-learning vivas) will be held in the assessment period at the end of trimester 2. Any group which is "not satisfactory" has an opportunity to remedy any problems during term 3, prior to a repeat assessment at the end of that term.
Clinical assessments are held towards the end of term 3.
