ADVICE FOR VISITING RESEARCHERS

Permission to carry out research work anywhere in Papua New Guinea is initially dependent upon affiliation with a government institution, e.g. UPNG. In the case of MIRC, affiliation is sought directly with us. There is a requirement for each researcher to hold the appropriate visa. This process may take some time, and we recommend that the process begins 4- 6 months in advance of the proposed research.

Prospective researchers should immediately request a copy of “Research Visas: Conditions and Guidleines for Researchers & Film-Makers in Papua New Guinea” from the National Research Institute ( nri@global.net.pg ) and contact the MIRC Director for further information ( bainemsp@upng.ac.pg ).

The affiliating committee may stipulate conditions for research, e.g. provision of a duplicate reference collection and copies of reports and papers to the MIRC Director. Seminars at the University by visiting researchers are much appreciated.

Depending on the nature of the research and the involvement of MIRC, the costs of using MIRC facilities will vary, an indication being approximately 50-150 kina per day. The charge will also depend on the facilities required. We encourage research collaboration between MIRC and external researchers, and there are always avenues for exploring special rates with the Director, depending on the circumstances and potential benefits to MIRC and Papua New Guinea of the research in question.

Potential research visitors are encouraged to make early contact with the MIRC Director to discuss their aims and needs. We want you to visit our Centre.
