Use Planning and Training in the PNG Deepwater Snapper Fishery
Funding Organisation: European Union through the Rural Coastal Fisheries Development Programme (RCFDP)
Funds Awarded: 319,000 Kina
Duration: August 2004 – July 2006
The objective of the RCFDP is poverty alleviation. To achieve this, the RCFDP strives to improve the welfare of the rural coastal population in PNG through greater participation in the harvesting and marketing of their marine resources. This is being attempted via a process of using Private Sector Partners and a loan scheme to enable fishing groups to purchase boats, fishing gear and other equipment. The Resource Use Planning and Training Program (RUPTP), is one component of the RCFDP and assists communities and Provincial Fisheries Officers in acquiring necessary resource management skills. The main focus for the RUPTP is the deepwater snapper fishery.
