science baseline study for leatherback turtle nesting beach projects in PNG
Funding Organisation: Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council
Funds Awarded: 45,000 USD (approximately 130,000 Kina)
Duration: October 2005 September 2006
This project aimed to:
1.Address the social impacts of the Councils conservation efforts at the village level in PNG to try and understand the socio-cultural and socio-economic impacts of leatherback turtle conservation activities, and
2.Identify potential cultural or institutional pit falls, which could threaten the long-term continuity and success of these activities.
MIRC, through its Coastal Fisheries Advisor, has provided specific guidance and recommendations to the Council on how best to implement and sustain these projects from a social and cultural perspective.
