Renewal Selection Procedures
1 The present selection and selection approval procedures below do not refer to Associate Professor and Professor.
2 For Senior Lecturer and Lecturer the following apply.
- Approvals of Senior Lecturer appointments and contract renewals will be an executive management function of the Vice Chancellor acting on the recommendation of the School Selection/Contract Renewal Committee.
- Approvals of Lecturer appointments and below will be an executive management function of the Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) acting on the recommendation of the School Selection/Contract Renewal Committee.
3 For Senior Lecturer and below the following selection committee structures will apply.
Tutor (all levels), Lecturer 1 and 2:
- Executive Dean (Chair)
- Strand Leader
- A Professor External to the School
- A nominee of the staff of the relevant Strand/Discipline/Division
- Director of IDCE or senior nominee.
Senior Lecturer:
- Pro Vice Chancellor (Chair)
- Executive Dean
- Strand Leader
- Professor External to the School
- A nominee of the Staff of the relevant strand/discipline/division
- Director of IDCE or senior nominee.
4 For the position of Senior Lecturer and Lecturer 1:
- Interviews will be conducted whenever possible.
- For those applicants who are not available in Port Moresby at least a telephone interview will be conducted.
- When the technology is installed, A-V interviews will be conducted.
5 For Senior Lecturers, wherever possible a seminar will be presented by each of the applicants to the academic body, with staff feedback informing the decision of the Selection Committee.
6 Culling of applicants will be the responsibility of the Chair of the Selection Committee and must involve as a minimum, all other members of the Selection Committee. Normally, the Committee will seek the advice of the School and/or Strand membership as part of the culling process.
7 A member of Staff Office will attend all selection meetings in a support and advisory role. Letters of offer will be prepared by the Dean’s Office, but will be dispatched by Staff Office, under the Registrar’s signature.
8 In confirming Committee recommendations the Senior Executive will take into account the following:
- Confirmation that the appointment complements the School’s approved teaching/program profile, and/or its approved development plan.
- Confirmation that funding is available.
- Confirmation that all approved procedures have been followed.
- The level of appointment and any precedents this might create within or across Schools.
Senior Executives will normally not make academic judgements on the recommendations, except in the case of obvious anomaly.
9 The decision of the appropriate approving Senior Executive is final, except that if it is determined to decline the recommendation, further consultation with the Chair of the Selection Committee and/or the Committee as a whole must take place, prior to implementation of the determination.
10 All decisions will be referred to the University Staffing Committee (USC) for noting.
