Dr Solomon Awili is an academic and specialises in teaching banking, finance and statistical courses at both the under-graduate and post-graduate (i.e. MBA) levels. Dr Solomon Awili holds a doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Finance from the Flinders University (his thesis titled “Financial Sector Development and Economic Growth Nexus: An Empirical Analysis of Pacific Melanesian Countries” is available online). Dr Awili is currently the Head of the Banking and Finance Department. Dr Awili also holds the following qualifications: Master of Finance (Curtin, Australia); Bachelor of Economics (UPPNG); Diploma in Accounting (UPNG); and Certificate in Strategic Leadership from Australian Awards.

In addition, Dr Awili worked as a Marketing Finance Executive (at the middle executive management level) with British American Tobacco (PNG) Limited prior to joining the academia. During his doctoral studies, Dr Awili had the opportunity to work with the South Australia Government’s Department of Treasury and Finance in areas of debt management, taxation, budgeting and policy as an intern. In 2013 whilst pursuing his studies, Dr Awili won the 2013 3-Minute Thesis Competition at the Flinders Business School. In April 2019, Dr Awili become the first UPNG academic to have his research paper titled “Financial Openness, Trade Integration And Economic Growth: The Case of Pacific Melanesian Countries” published in the high ranking Journal of Developing Areas (JDA) in USA. Dr Awili has research interest in financial sector growth, M&A, corporate governance, financial markets and financial innovation.
