The strand embraces Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Language Communication, Literacy and Modern Languages namely; Tok-Pisin, HiriMotu, Japanese, Bahasa Indonesia and French. The program enables a student to graduate with a certificate, diploma or a Bachelor of Arts degree (with a major in Linguistics). The strand contributes to the knowledge and understanding of languages of Papua New Guinea and the world through teaching, research and consultation, thereby ensuring their continuity as indispensable tools of sustainable development.
The strand’s mission is to support the understanding of PNG’s 854 Austronesian and Papuan languages through a scientific study and description of PNG’s and the world’s more than 6,000 languages; prepare graduates and post graduates (BAH, MA and PhD) in linguistics, developmental linguistics, and others; develop or train quality language teachers; provide expertise and advice through consultation and communication to government on the role of languages in shaping society; and expose students to the different branches of linguistics such as descriptive linguistics, anthropological linguistics, socio-linguistics, psycholinguistics, historical comparative linguistics, typological linguistics, computational linguistics, discourse analysis, pragmatics, and so on.
