The Papua New Guinea Centre for Judicial Excellence, Supreme & National Courts of Justice, in collaboration with the University of Papua New Guinea, will host a guest lecture on Trial Preparation: “My Route from Bar to the Bench”.

Justice Nicholas J. Cooper
National and Supreme Courts of Papua New Guinea

Justice Nicholas J. Cooper is a British-trained lawyer and judge who has served in the Pacific region. Before joining the judiciary, he practised law in the United Kingdom, including work as a prosecutor and criminal lawyer, with experience in financial crime, organized crime, drug trafficking, and corruption cases.

In March 2021, Justice Cooper was appointed to the Supreme Court of Tonga, where he presided over a range of criminal, constitutional, and civil matters.

In 2024, he was appointed as a judge of the National and Supreme Courts of Papua New Guinea for a three-year term, and he commenced service there in 2025. As of January 2026, he was serving on the Papua New Guinea bench, based in Kimbe, West New Britain Province.
